Is Your School or Business a Safe Zone for Transgender People?

March 31st is Transgender Day of Visibility.  It’s of massive importance because it stands as a beacon of pride and hope for all transgender people, young and old, who are struggling for acceptance of who they are and/or want to be. Even in 2023, the LGBTQI+ community still face persecution on the streets, in the class room, and in the workplace.

The statistics on the mental suffering of transgender people are damning

In my work with LGBTQI+ and specifically transgender teenagers and adults, the level of hate crime suffered, some times on a daily basis, continues to be nothing short of shocking.

In a 2018 LGBTQI+ health report by the leading charity that supports LGBTQI+ people, Stonewall, the following statistics were made public:

  • Half of all LGBTQI+ people experience periods of depression and 3 in 5 experience anxiety.
  • 1 in 8 LGBTQI+ people aged 18-24years old have attempted to end their life.
  • Half of transgender people have thought about taking their own life.

These statistics are appalling, especially that which applies specifically to the transgender section of the community.  Something has to change.  A change is required  to improve the life experience and mental distress of the this WONDERFUL section of our community.

Is your school, business, or charity a safe zone for transgender people?

Whilst the government works on addressing the massive waiting lists for transgender people seeking support, what else can you be doing to lend your support?

Have you thought about making your school, charity, business or organisation a SAFEZONE for transgender and other LGBTQI+ people?

Creating a SAFEZONE allows LGBTQI+ people to flourish.  In a SAFEZONE they know that they can be their authentic selves without the fear of discrimination and/or unfair treatment in any way, shape or form.  By making your place of work feel safer, LGBTQI+ people are more likely to feel happier, and have increased confidence to shine.

Suggested changes toward creating a SAFESPACE could include:

  1. Developing a clear mission statement for supporting LGBTQI+ and transgender people.
  2. Taking discrimination of this community seriously.
  3. Developing support programs.
  4. Engaging senior leaders to be visible in support.
  5. Training LGBTQI+ allies who can be visible and prepared to offer support.
  6. Fostering a gender neutral environment e.g. unisex toilets and use of gender neutral language.
  7. Providing staff training.

I can help you develop a SAFEZONE culture and I provide training for employees.  Please get in touch for more information.
